Signs of poor hygiene and neglect in a nursing home

Nursing home care can have benefits for both patients and caregivers. However, some nursing homes in Florida are just in it for the money and don’t care about the needs of their residents. Here are some signs that your loved one is not receiving the care that they need from the caregivers at their nursing home.

Greasy hair and body odor

Your loved one should be bathed on a daily basis. If their hair is greasy or they have body odor, then this can be a sign that they haven’t had a bath in a while and are being neglected. Talking to the staff can help you determine why your loved one’s hygiene is being neglected.

Dirty clothes

Dirty clothes are a sign of neglect. If your loved one is still able to communicate well with you, ask them why they haven’t changed their clothes. It may simply be a matter of them having difficulty doing it on their own and them being too embarrassed to ask for help. If this is the case, then it’s a good idea to alert the staff that your loved one needs help with changing as they may not be aware of it.

Bedsores

If your loved one spends a lot of time in bed without getting up, they can start to develop bedsores. Nursing home staff should be aware of this, and they should be coming to your loved one’s room consistently to reposition them so that they don’t develop these sores. Bedsores are one of the easiest signs of neglect to spot.

Putting your loved one in a nursing home probably wasn’t an easy decision, and you want to do all that you can to ensure that they are being cared for at all times. If you are worried about neglect, make sure you visit your loved one often. This will show them that you care, and being a frequent visitor will allow you to spot issues as quickly as possible.
