Is a Diaper Rash a Sign of Nursing Home Neglect?

On Behalf of | Jul 22, 2021 | Assisted Living Facility Abuse and Neglect, Nursing Home Abuse and Neglect

Diaper rash is extremely common and can impact anyone in Florida who wears diapers, from children to adults. However, recurring adult diaper rash can sometimes be a sign of bigger issues.

What does adult diaper rash look like?

Adult diaper rash looks the same as diaper rashes in children. Usually the skin will be very pink or even red and inflamed. In some cases, the skin is raw or even burnt looking. Other times, lesions can form and you’ll see skin peeling along the thighs, butt and genital area. Adults experiencing a diaper rash might complain of a burning sensation or severe itching. Sometimes more severe cases of diaper rash will look different, with raised bumps or even scabbed over areas.

What causes adult diaper rash?

The causes of diaper rash are the same regardless of age. Diaper rashes are usually caused by infrequent diaper changes, or inadequate cleaning of the genital and buttocks area during diaper changes.

Sometimes, the skin can become irritated from the dirty diaper and rub certain areas of the skin raw. In the worst cases, the chemicals from the human waste as well as any perfumes in the diaper can cause severe infections that take a while to clean up.

How is diaper rash a red flag for nursing home abuse?

If your loved one is in adult diapers and relies on nursing home staff to change them frequently and clean them up after they use the bathroom. So if your loved one is suffering from frequent adult diaper rashes, that could mean that they’re not being changed as often as they need to be.

If your loved one suffers from an adult diaper rash, they will need careful cleaning and ointment application with every diaper change. If a diaper rash isn’t being treated, it could lead to severe infections and allergic reactions the longer it goes on.
