You always need to report elder abuse to protect the vulnerable

Elder abuse is harmful both physically and psychologically. It often goes unreported, so even though statistics may show improvements, it’s vital to be cautious. The elderly sometimes do not understand what’s happening due to their mental state, while others don’t want to bother people with their problems. Still others don’t report abuse because of fear or because they have no one to turn to.

What are some forms of elder abuse?

Several forms of elder abuse exist including:

  • Emotional abuse
  • Exploitation
  • Neglect
  • Sexual abuse
  • Abandonment
  • Physical abuse

Not all kinds of abuse are obvious, which is why it’s so difficult to know if someone is being hurt by another person.

Why is elder abuse so often underreported?

Elder abuse is often unreported because of elders being unable to report due to illness, physical condition or mental condition. The individual may rely on the abuser for care and have no one else to turn to.

Others may believe that they’ll be placed in an institution or nursing home if they complain, which may be something they want to avoid. Others may worry about getting the abuser in trouble, even though they’re the ones suffering from it. This is particularly common when the abuser is someone that they’re close to.

If your loved one has dealt with abuse, it’s not fair for them to continue living with it. Everyone deserves to be treated with love and respect, especially in old age. You can help your loved one by reporting this abuse, no matter who caused it. There are ways that the law can help.
