Are there treatment options for bedsores?

On Behalf of | Dec 18, 2025 | Bedsores

When it comes to bedsores in nursing homes, there is often a large focus on prevention. In a recent post, we discussed common preventative steps, which include providing appropriate cushioning for residents and helping them move regularly.

But what if the bedsores have already developed? Are there treatment options that can help them heal and recover?

Wound care and treatment

There are different ways to treat bedsores, depending on the severity. If a bedsore has begun to develop, staff should be proactive about helping a patient move frequently so it does not progress to a more significant stage. It can also help to focus on proper nutrition that promotes healing, especially when it comes to protein, zinc, iron and Vitamin C.

In other cases, wound dressings are used. For instance, stage one or stage two bedsores can often be treated with hydrocolloid dressings. This keeps bacteria from getting into the wound and keeps it moist so that it can heal.

Dressings should be changed frequently, and different types of salves or creams may be beneficial. For the most significant bedsores, when they are deep enough to go through the skin and get into muscle tissue, more serious medical treatment may be necessary. Surgical options may be considered to remove the affected tissue.

Your family’s legal options

If you have a loved one who has developed one or more bedsores, it can cause them significant pain and suffering, and it can cause their fragile health conditions to get worse over time. It is critical that you and your family understand exactly what legal options you have.
