The 4 main stages of bedsores

On Behalf of | Dec 11, 2024 | Bedsores

Bedsores can vary significantly from one patient to the next. In some cases, they can be caught early, and healing may be possible. However, in severe cases, they can become infected or even lead to sepsis—a blood infection with potentially fatal consequences.

As such, it’s important to understand how bedsores tend to progress and what types of treatment may be necessary. Below are the four main stages that bedsores typically progress through:

Stage One

The first stage often appears similar to a bruise. The area may be slightly itchy, tender or warm. The skin may take on a reddish, purplish or bluish hue.

Stage Two

In the second stage, the bruise worsens and may turn into a blister or an abrasion. It can develop into an open sore. At this point, bedsores often become painful, and it’s clear there is a significant issue.

Stage Three

In the third stage, tissue damage becomes severe, and the skin can sink inward, resembling a crater. The edges of the sore may darken, and the area may be extremely painful. However, the damage is still primarily confined to the skin.

Stage Four

The fourth stage is when the damage spreads to surrounding tissues, such as muscles or even bones. Bone infections may occur, and sepsis becomes a serious risk. The wound may be covered with slimy tissue that conceals its full severity, but some of this tissue may consist of dead skin, making the injury evident.
