On Behalf of | Mar 19, 2021 | Nursing Home Abuse and Neglect

If you reside in a nursing home, you must remain vigilant and keep an eye out for neglect. Nursing home residents suffer due to neglect in many different ways and it is pivotal for victims to understand their rights and take action swiftly. Moreover, if you suspect that your loved one is experiencing neglect, remain committed to addressing the mistreatment in a timely manner.

Neglect takes many different forms and some people do not realize that certain behaviors constitute neglect.

Looking at examples of neglect

On their site, the U.S. Government Accountability Office outlines various forms of abuse and neglect in nursing homes. The GAO states that neglect occurs when a nursing home worker fails or refuses to fulfill their job duties with respect to providing an older adult with the care they are counting on. For example, if a nursing home worker does not give a resident certain necessities, such as clothing, water or food, this could constitute neglect. Sometimes, nursing home residents do not receive the medication they need and their personal hygiene is not attended to, which can also constitute neglect.

Looking at the impact of nursing home neglect

Neglect can also include a nursing home’s failure to protect the safety of residents and provide them with a sense of comfort. Neglect carries a number of physical, emotional and even financial hurdles. If you experience neglect, you could struggle with a worsened medical condition, bed sores or other physical setbacks. Emotionally, neglect is often devastating and can lead to a sense of insecurity, anxiety and depression. Review your options if you have dealt with neglect firsthand.
