Senior Living Facility Accident Results in Patient Injury

On Behalf of | Jan 28, 2020 | Nursing Home Abuse and Neglect

Nursing homes and assisted living facilities can provide your loved one with the care they need in their old age. And while it can sometimes be a difficult decision to move your loved one into a home or assisted living facility, it may be the best choice for everyone. However, if your loved one experiences abuse or neglect at the hands of their caregivers, it can be shocking, frustrating and heartbreaking.

This was the case for an Alzheimer patient at Brookdale Chambrel senior living facility in Roswell, Georgia.

A serious wound

The patient, an 84-year-old woman, sustained a gash in her leg shortly after moving into the residency in the early spring of 2019. Her daughters reported the injury, saying that it required 20 stitches and a trip to the emergency room. Allegedly, the woman sustained the injury after a facility employee swung her into the side of a bed.

One of the daughters quoted her mother, who said, “They just picked me up and swung me around like a rag doll and swung me into the side of the bed.”

Clearly, with a wound as deep as the victim’s, there must have been quite a bit of force to the action. The police and EMTs said as much during the time of the incident, according to the family’s attorney, Derek Hays.

The facility speaks out

At the time, the employees who were present during the incident said it was an accident, and the woman’s daughters believed them. Now, however, police are conducting an investigation.

Representatives from the senior living facility made it clear that they don’t tolerate this kind of treatment. However, they, too, believe it was an accident. They released a statement, saying, “We take claims like this very seriously as the trust of our residents and families is extremely important to us. The associates caring for her immediately reported what happened and, after an internal investigation, we did not find any reason to believe this situation was anything more than an accident caused by metal slates on the bed.”

The police have yet to close the case.

Seek justice for your loved one

No elderly person deserves mistreatment in a place that’s meant to take care of them. Unfortunately, patients with Alzheimer’s are all-too-often targeted because of their vulnerability. Yet regardless of your loved one’s health, if they experience abuse or neglect at the hands of an inattentive or negligent caregiver, don’t hesitate to protect your loved one’s safety, well-being and happiness.
