What Are Some Red Flags in a Nursing Home?

On Behalf of | Nov 1, 2019 | Nursing Home Abuse and Neglect

Nursing home abuse is something that you could never expect in a nursing home. After all, this is a facility designed to protect and care for the elderly, so it doesn’t make sense for people to be in danger there.

Sadly, not all nursing homes are up to the task of caring for your elderly loved one. Nursing home neglect and abuse do happen. It’s important that you do all you can to identify if a nursing home is right for your loved one or if you’d be better off with another option.

What are some warning signs during a nursing home visit?

When it’s time to choose a nursing home, you should do so only after you visit it several times. The first visit, you can expect that the nursing home’s director or representative will be prepared to see you and take you around the building. Everything may be presentable, but that’s because they knew you were coming.

The true test occurs if you show up unexpectedly. If you do, you may find that there are issues happening that you didn’t see the first time. Some bad signs include:

  • Heavy scents, such as the scents of urine or vomit
  • Patients who are injured or obviously unable to help themselves without any nearby nursing home staff members
  • Seeing no nurses at the nurse’s station
  • Patients who are being ignored, threatened or neglected

If you see anything that makes you feel uneasy, you should know that you have the right to report those issues and to look for a different facility for your loved one’s care.
