How can you help a loved one dealing with long-term abuse?

Elder abuse is one of the problems that the elderly may face when they’re in the care of others. In the short-term, abuse might lead to small injuries or symptoms like dehydration or a change in behavior. However, as time goes on, the impact of long-term abuse becomes much more apparent.

Long-term abuse can lead to an elder becoming fearful, depressed or angry. They may internalize their feelings and believe that the abuse is their fault. Just like with anyone, when abuse is a regular part of life, it can begin to wear down on their bodies and minds.

If your parent or loved one was a victim of long-term abuse, what can you do to help?

If long-term abuse was a problem in your loved one’s life, one thing you can suggest is counseling or support groups. There are support groups for the elderly, and protective services can give you more information on those if your loved one has been harmed in the past.

On a more personal level, you can make sure that you do all you can to get justice for your loved one. Make sure they know that you are there for them and that you’re taking steps to prevent things like this from happening ever again. You can pursue a lawsuit against the nursing home or agency that hired those who harmed your loved one, allowing you to fight for compensation and the justice your loved one deserves.
