How Often Should You Visit Someone With Memory Loss?

On Behalf of | Nov 13, 2018 | Firm News

When your loved one is aging, there is a likelihood that they will develop trouble with their memory. This isn’t uncommon, and there are special facilities that focus on helping those with memory loss.

As a loved one of someone with memory loss, it can be hard to handle a parent who doesn’t recognize you or forgets what they’ve just said. However, these individuals are at an increased risk of neglect and abuse because of their condition.

If you place a loved one in a nursing home or assisted-living facility, you need to visit them regularly and monitor their care. Here’s a little more on this sensitive topic.

How often should you visit a loved one in memory care?

It’s important to visit regularly, at least at first. Regularly means at least once a day or as often as possible in each week. This is helpful at first, while the patient gets used to the new environment.

After a few weeks, it’s possible to begin cutting back the number of visits. However, you’ll still want to make sure you visit three or four times a week, sticking to a schedule your loved one can remember. People with memory loss and dementia do well with schedules, so do your best to come on time and at the same time each time you visit.

Visiting a loved one, even if they don’t remember you, will improve their mood. It also gives you a chance to monitor their care. Regular visits are an important part of aging care, so remember to stop in as often as possible.
