3 Alternatives to a Nursing Home

On Behalf of | Jul 30, 2018 | Nursing Home Abuse and Neglect

If you have a parent or loved one who is aging, it is reasonable to have concerns about his or her well-being and quality of life. This is especially true if (s)he is struggling with memory or experiencing other health problems that necessitate careful attention. A nursing home might seem like the obvious solution, and indeed, there are many that might offer great care options to you.

The unfortunate truth remains, however, that elder abuse is rampant in such environments. According to STAT, much of it goes unreported, too. If you are looking for safer ways to keep your parent’s quality of life intact and provide him or her with the care (s)he needs, consider the following three alternatives.

1. Modify your home

Many people consider nursing homes the best options because they are unable to accommodate their parent’s needs in their own home. You should consider, though, whether it is possible to simply modify your home to meet your loved one’s needs. You may be able to make it handicap accessible or install a more user-friendly shower. Changes like this are not always cost-prohibitive, and they can be a great option.

2. Assistance with tasks

You might also be considering a nursing home if your parent has come to struggle with completing daily tasks independently. There are many services available that provide assistance with such tasks, though, so that seniors can still live at home and retain independence. Transportation services, meal delivery and housekeeping providers are all viable alternatives to ensure tasks are completed around the house.

3. In-home caregiver

If your parent’s needs go beyond simply completing daily tasks, you might consider a more attentive form of assistance. Hiring an in-home aide or caregiver is a great option that allows you to ensure your loved one receives care and assistance but does not have to forgo his or her autonomy. You can schedule an aide during times when you are at work, too, so that you can provide care when you get home.
