When you look for red flags that might indicate abuse or neglect in the nursing home, most people tend to look at their loved one first. They want to find physical signs of abuse like bruises, or even behavioral signs like reticence or unexplained aggression.

But did you know that the red flags you are looking for might also appear within the staff itself? Whether in an individual or in the staff on a whole, there are certain signs you can keep an eye out for.

Revolving door of employees

The National Institute on Aging points out potential warning signs of neglect that you can see within the staff itself. First, pay attention to “revolving door staff”. This refers to a location in which you constantly see new faces, with old employees constantly quitting or getting fired.

This could indicate several problems. First, the employees are not satisfied with conditions at work. Maybe they are underpaid and overworked. If so, this could lead to neglect due to staff getting stretched too thin. Maybe they notice abusive behavior in other staff members. Perhaps they themselves end up victims of abuse at the hands of coworkers or employers.

Avoidance of straight answers

Next, keep an eye out for non-answers. If you have an issue, do you get clear and concise communication? Or do you feel like staff gives you the run-around? Do they refuse to give you a straight answer? Do they constantly refer you to other people or direct you into a wild goose chase? It could potentially indicate they have something to hide.
