Choosing a nursing home for your loved one can be a daunting task. This is especially true given the nursing home abuse and neglect that is far too prevalent in our state and our country. Fortunately, there are organizations, professionals, and media outlets that can help you make your decision. In fact, U.S. News & World Report recently released its list of best nursing homes, which is compiled after looking at a variety of factors including staffing levels, infection control, flu vaccination rates, and quality of care. So how did Florida stack up in the rankings?
Florida’s high-ranking nursing homes
Sadly, Florida isn’t at the top of the list of states with the most nursing homes rated as “high performing.” That distinction goes to California, with Florida, Illinois, and New Jersey following suit. Florida has 68 nursing homes that are rated a five out of five, but that number is dismal considering that there are more than 700 nursing homes in the state. Not all of these 68 nursing homes are considered a Best Nursing Home by U.S. News & World Report.
What does this mean for you?
These kinds of lists can be helpful as you navigate the complicated world of nursing homes. However, with so many options out there you really need to conduct a detailed analysis of each nursing home that you might be interested in placing your loved one. Visit the home on multiple occasions to not only see the facilities, but also to observe the residents and their demeanor. Ask about staffing levels and nutrition. Research to see if the nursing home has had any recent violations of state regulations. There are a lot of other things you can do to ensure that you’re loved one ends up in a nursing home that provides the safe care your loved one deserves.
What if something goes wrong?
Nursing home abuse and neglect is far more common than we care to think. If you or a loved one is injured due to abuse or neglect, then you should consider legal action. While a successful claim may bring some much needed compensation, it can also provide accountability and, perhaps, prevent others from suffering a similar fate. After all, a successful abuse or neglect lawsuit is probably going to prevent a nursing home from finding its way to any sort of “best” list.
