Has Your Loved One Missed Their Medication? It Could Be Neglect

On Behalf of | May 28, 2020 | Assisted Living Facility Abuse and Neglect, Nursing Home Abuse and Neglect

Many of our elderly loved ones rely on medication to treat chronic illnesses, maintain healthy blood pressure, uphold their mental health and prevent other health concerns. However, if that medication is not administered properly, their health can suffer.

As the New York Times notes, failure to take medication is a common sign that elderly people are not giving themselves the care that they need. Failure to take medication in a care facility could be a sign that your loved one’s caregivers are neglecting their duty and not providing your loved one with the care that they need.

The effects of medication neglect can be deadly.

In failing to give the elderly the medication they need to thrive, their caregivers fail to uphold their standard of care. It can also be deadly. The New York Times reports that the failure to take medication as prescribed can be deadly, causing an estimated 125,000 deaths and one-tenth of hospitalizations in the United States each year.

Is your loved one at risk?

When your loved ones’ caregivers fail to protect their health, it can be important to act as soon as possible. The effects of neglect—especially if that neglect results in the failure to take medication—could be deadly. The National Adult Protective Services Administration recommends calling the authorities if you notice signs of neglect, including the failure to take prescribed medications.

You may also consider taken legal action against your elderly loved one’s neglectful caregivers. Your loved one could receive compensation for the toll that neglect has taken on their health, and holding caregivers responsible can help prevent other families from suffering the same way.
