Socialization and its importance for the elderly

Neglect can have a drastic impact on the elderly in many different ways. They may not get the medication they need, they may not get assistance with difficult tasks and they may suffer from dehydration and malnutrition. It all depends on the specifics of the case.

One thing that you can't overlook, though, is that neglect can lead to a lack of socialization. An elderly person can start feeling isolated and alone. They may technically get the care that they need to survive, but that does not mean their best interests have actually come first.

Below are three main ways that socialization can help:

  • Studies have found that the rate of memory loss, a routine issue with the elderly, may actually slow down for those who get more socialization and interaction.
  • When someone does get proper socialization, both their quality of life and their overall mood can improve. This may help to combat issues like depression, anxiety and fear.
  • The Alzheimer's Association notes that social engagement can potentially keep dementia from setting in as early and may improve an elderly person's brain health.

As you can see, a lack of neglect is about more than just meeting someone's basic needs. It is about giving them these human interactions that they need to stay healthy for years to come. When someone doesn't get that, it can have a huge negative impact on their life and their health, even if they technically got the food, medication, water and other basic things they need.

If you worry that your loved one is suffering from neglect, it may be time to look into all of your legal options.
