How can you recognize elder abuse in assisted living?

In an assisted-living facility or community, the elders who are there can usually take care of themselves. However, there may be times when they need a little help. For that reason, the apartments and homes may have call buttons and nurse lines to help them get assistance when it's needed.

Many older individuals are victims of elder abuse, even though they're capable in some ways. Mistreatment comes in several forms including financial abuse, neglect, physical abuse or emotional abuse. Elders may not report this abuse, even if they are able to, for fear of more significant mistreatment in the future.

What are some signs of elder abuse in assisted-living facilities?

Elder abuse signs include:

  • Poor hygiene
  • Dirty or neglected rooms or apartments
  • Changes in an elder's personality
  • Agitiation
  • Depression
  • Unexplained bruising
  • Missing cash or assets

What should you do if you suspect elder abuse?

There is no time to wait if you suspect elder abuse is taking place. It's important to contact adult protective services to help your loved one protect him or herself. Additionally, you should contact 911 if the individual is hurt or in danger. You can talk to the director of the assisted-living facility as well, to make sure he or she is aware that you have concerns. Most directors will want to know so that they can address the individuals causing problems on the premises.

After you get your loved one to somewhere safe, you can start looking into your legal options. There may be a chance to fight for fair compensation for what your loved one suffered.
