Gainesville man held for neglect in elderly father’s death

On Behalf of | May 11, 2018 | Elder Neglect

Nearly every parent can testify that taking care of someone full-time, even in one’s own home, can be a very heavy burden. Only some adults know the trials and labors of home care for an elderly parent or other relative, and the severity of needs for disabled people can overwhelm someone easily.

Florida is home to a large number of senior citizens, many of whom need medical assistance or special needs to continue living their best lives. There are many licensed nursing homes and assisted living facilities that offer professional care around the clock, although many people prefer independence and remain at home with help such as health aides or family members.

People who shirk their responsibilities as a caretaker may put a life in jeopardy, as well as their own freedom. Florida law punishes people who endanger or end the life of an elderly person who requires care. A man in Gainesville is facing justice after he allegedly let his father die at home from complications of elder neglect.

The 93-year-old victim was discovered on a tile floor by a paramedic who suspected abuse and contacted the Florida Department of Children and Families. Due to the presence of urine and other human waste on the scene, as well as the victim’s severe hypothermia and malnourishment, the paramedic said “it was the worst case of neglect [he] has ever seen.” The victim died shortly afterwards in the hospital.

Victims of elder neglect in nursing homes or at home, or the families of the deceased victims of neglect, may have a case for wrongful death or financial damages. An attorney may help a family recover from an elder member’s tragic loss of life.
