Nursing home reviewed after guest injury and death

Millions of Americans rely on nursing homes and their caregivers to ensure the safety and health of our elderly friends and relatives. This is certainly true in Florida, home to millions of senior citizens who often require specialized medication and care to reduce pain and stay active. Betrayal of the trust that nursing homes assume for residents can be painful and damaging.

Officials with the Department of Children and Families (DCF) and the Agency for Healthcare Administration (AHA) re reviewing a complaint against a nursing home in Brevard County. The daughter of an 81-year-old woman reported her mother came home with bruises all over her body before dying a few days later.

The elderly woman had been receiving hospice care at her Merritt Island home for months and was transferred to the nursing home after foul weather endangered the local electricity. After a two-day stay at the assisted care facility, she showed deep purple bruises and skin tears from head to toe.

Caregivers at the nursing home were aware that the woman was a fall risk, which dictated that her bed be checked every 15 minutes. This move was to prevent negligence in care or general neglect, so the woman’s ultimate condition remains unexplained.

Victims of nursing home abuse or neglect, as well as their families, have the right to seek answers and restitution from the responsible parties. An attorney may help sort out the legal options in the Sunshine State, as well as assist with evidence, liaise with law enforcement and investigate the extent of abuse of neglect.
