Your vigilance can help prevent nursing home abuse

On Behalf of | Jun 6, 2017 | Nursing Home Abuse

Recently, we discussed the warning signs of nursing home neglect in our blog. This time, we thought it would be a good idea to talk about some things you can do to help keep your loved one safe from nursing home abuse and neglect.

For many of us, nursing home abuse or neglect is difficult to imagine. Some of the questions that come to mind about this difficult topic include: Who could do such a thing to someone so vulnerable? How can this abuse go unnoticed inside a facility? Often, we cannot find answers to these questions and it is becoming a concern for many Florida residents with aging family members.

When the time comes for you to find a home for your elder, we encourage you to tour and inspect more than one facility. This ensures that you find a home that meets your elder’s needs and fits with his or her personality and lifestyle. Once you do find a home, the tips below will help you remain vigilant about your loved one’s care and quality of life.

— Visit your loved one frequently to make certain that his or her mental and physical condition remains optimal.

— Review your elder’s care plan and ensure that all caregivers follow this plan.

— Check to see that your elder’s schedule for physical and other therapies is being followed.

— Make sure your loved one’s weight and water intake remains optimal.

— Watch for unexplained bruising and other physical issues.

— Note any emotional changes your loved one may display such as depression and fearfulness.

While it is certainly upsetting to think your elder may be suffering from nursing home abuse, your continued vigilance is crucial to keep him or her safe. If you believe your loved one is unsafe, speak to an attorney about your concerns. You can learn more about neglect and abuse on our legal website.
