What are some warning signs of nursing home neglect?

When you ask questions like these, it shows that you are concerned about any elder loved ones who may reside in a nursing facility. Unfortunately, you already know that nursing home neglect and abuse can happen; being able to identify neglect is important in keeping your loved one safe and in assigning blame.

Many Florida residents think it will be easy to spot nursing home neglect, but that is not always the case. Sometimes, it looks like a simple illness. Other times, neglect may manifest slowly, making the signs difficult to identify. Knowing your loved one and his or her current condition at all times can help you identify and remedy any signs of nursing home neglect that do begin to manifest.

In the meantime, the list below contains some of the most common warning signs that an elder may be suffering from neglect in a nursing facility.

Poor hygiene: If you notice that your loved one emits an odor or is visibly dirty, neglect could be an issue. You should also make sure his or her surroundings are kept clean and sanitized.

Unexplained injuries: If your loved one begins to experience unexplained injuries, it could be a sign that he or she lacks proper monitoring and daily assistance.

Weight loss and dehydration: Your elder needs a nutritious diet and plenty of fluids. If you notice weight loss or signs of dehydration, your loved one’s nutritional needs may have fallen by the wayside.

Emotional or psychological changes: Feeling unwanted, ignored and unworthy of care can lead to depression, withdrawal, fearfulness and many other emotional or psychological changes. If you spot any of these, it is important to address them immediately.

No one likes to think about nursing home neglect, but if you have entrusted your elder to such a facility, you have to remain on guard for the warning signs. Further, it is wise to seek legal assistance if you believe your loved one has become a victim of nursing home neglect.
