After resident dies, assisted living facility is blamed

The Alpine Adult Care Center, located in Pensacola, Florida, has been accused of negligence after a resident passed away. The warning about the assisted living facility came from the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration, which said it can’t admit anyone else while the investigation is going on. As a result, potential new patients have been turned away.

The report makes a number of claims, all of which are very serious. It says that the staff was inept at their jobs, that they did not do proper record-keeping and that they were negligent and allowed the patient to pass away.

The facility only has 14 beds, which is not that large compared to others in the same industry. Despite the small size, though, the report claims that residents got the wrong doses of their medications and some were given medication even though their prescriptions had expired.

Additionally, the poor records revolved around end-of-life wishes and “Do not resuscitate” orders. These are very important in this industry, and improper care could have been given if the records weren’t up to date and available.

The patient who passed away was dealing with anxiety, schizophrenia and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The person’s condition had deteriorated to the point that hospice-level care was needed. The patient was supposed to get help with an inhaler every day and medication four times during the day, but the report from the AHCA alleges that the staff did not provide that care on more than one occasion.

When nursing home neglect leaves a loved one in danger or even takes his or her life, family members need to know that they may have legal options. Compensation may be sought for funeral costs, additional medical costs and more.
