How much water should the elderly get?

Water is widely considered to be a cornerstone of good health, but dehydration remains a common problem in nursing homes and assisted living centers.Lack of proper amounts of water can be a serious detriment to the elderly, and this can lead to significant health issues. So, how much water should your elderly loved one get on a daily basis?

Typically, experts agree that around 64 ounces per day should be the goal. If a standard cup of water is about 8 ounces, that means drinking eight of them every 24 hours.

However, experts warn that a lot of factors come into play here. People are different sizes and have different activity levels, which could mean they may need more or less.

Some studies have suggested that men need to drink more water than women. The Mayo Clinic suggests 2.2 liters for women and 3 liters for men as a minimum.

It’s worth noting that the elderly can get water from other sources. If it’s hard to get someone to drink enough, eating soup can help. Fruit and vegetables provide natural water sources.

It’s best to drink water right after getting up in the morning, and about a half hour before every meal. However, it’s more important to focus on getting enough throughout the day than anything else.

Do you believe that your loved one is not being given nearly enough water or is being neglected and denied proper hydration in a nursing home? If so, it may be time for you to take action and look into your legal options.
