Nursing facilities see preventable adverse events

On Behalf of | Jun 23, 2016 | Hospital Negligence

Readers of this blog are well aware of the responsibilities carried by nursing homes and their employees. These duties shouldn’t be taken lightly, especially since a seemingly minor error in one area could lead to serious injuries or even death. Our elderly loved ones are vulnerable, and they should be treated with the utmost care. While this means being properly nourished, adequately monitored, and kept away from abuse while in a nursing home, it also means being given the proper care after a hospital stay.

For many Floridians, skilled nursing facilities are a place where they can go to improve their health and functioning after a hospitalization. Though these institutions are meant to help elderly individuals heal, far too often, they wind up causing more harm.

In fact, according to a study conducted by the Department of Health and Human Services, these healthcare facilities pose a significant threat to elderly patients. Researchers discovered that 22 percent of Medicare beneficiaries who utilize this service are subjected to adverse effects. Eleven percent of these individuals suffer temporary harm. It was determined that nearly 60 percent of these adverse events were preventable, which should be alarming for anyone who is a patient at one of these facilities.

Those who are injured while staying at one of these institutions can suffer extensive harm. They may experience physical or emotional pain and suffering, and they may require additional medical attention, which can be quite costly. Legal action in the form of a medical malpractice lawsuit may provide relief in the form of compensation, so victims of hospital negligence may want to consider what options are available to them.
