Florida nursing home placed on state and federal watch lists

In an attempt to ensure resident safety, Florida has imposed significant regulations on nursing homes. They also keep track of which facilities are abiding by the rules and those that are not, therefore putting innocent residents at risk of harm. Following which nursing homes are safe and which are not can be an effective way of determining where you or your elderly loved one should reside.

To help illustrate just how dangerous nursing homes in our state can be, one need only look at a Tampa institution. The state has recently named it one of the worst, as many residents have died as a result of staff negligence. In one instance, a man who had been at the nursing home for only one day perished after he collapsed and staff failed to initiate CPR. Reports also indicate that the nursing home’s director was even concerned for resident safety. There have also been instances of severe medication errors and failure to notify a doctor when a resident’s medical condition changes.

As a result of these serious errors, the nursing home will be put on the state’s watch list for the next 30 months. Additionally, the institution will be placed on the federal government’s watch list until significant improvements are seen.

Before choosing a nursing home, a family should find out as much information about it as they can. If a loved one is already in a nursing home, then stopping by unannounced and after peak hours may help provide valid insight into the sufficiency of the facility’s operations. In the event that harm is caused by nursing home neglect or nursing home abuse, then the victim and/or his or her family may want to consider taking legal action.
