Amputated leg found in trash, hospital sued

The law is full of grey areas. As much as Floridians want legal matters to be cut-and-dry, the reality of the matter is that many times the nuances of the law come into play. With that in mind, many would think that hospitals and medical professionals have done everything they can to avoid glaring mishaps. This would be an erroneous assumption, as one recently filed lawsuit in Coral Gables highlights.

According to the lawsuit, a local hospital amputated a man’s leg and, instead of incinerating it, simply tossed the limb in the garbage. The man’s family was contacted by homicide detectives after the leg was found at a waste facility with the man’s nametag still attached to it. The man is now suing the hospital for causing him emotional distress.

Though this case does not highlight what we traditionally think of as medical malpractice, it does illustrate how reckless hospitals and their employees can be. Sadly, this lack of competency leaks its way into every aspect of medical care, from surgical operations to medication prescriptions and initial diagnoses. Therefore, Floridians may find themselves at risk of harm at the hands of hospital negligence without even realizing it.

This is why it is important to know one’s legal rights. Whether a hospital mistake has caused what seems like a minor inconvenience or the unintentional loss of a limb, victims should take action to attempt to reach an outcome that is fair to them. Hopefully this will also deter negligent institutions and medical professionals from acting negligently in the future, which could prevent others from befalling similar harm.
