Failure to diagnose lung cancer ranks fourth for malpractice

Florida residents know that being sick is no fun. In addition to being physically difficult, individuals can be emotionally distraught if they believe the condition is serious. For this reason, we rely on trained and experienced medical professionals to diagnose our medical conditions. Unfortunately, however, when confronted with a complex illness like lung cancer, doctors have a lot to sift through to reach a proper diagnosis. This means that any slipup or moment of inattentiveness can result in a failure to diagnose and serious consequences for the patient.

Diagnosing lung cancer can be difficult for many reasons. One of the main reasons is that many lung cancer sufferers may not present symptoms in the early stages of the disease. However, a proper diagnosis may also be delayed when a doctor confuses signs of lung cancer with those of another disease, like bronchitis or asthma. A doctor’s error can also lead to a missed diagnosis. The doctor may fail to associate a symptom with lung cancer or may fail to order proper tests that, if run, could detect the disease. In fact, lung cancer misdiagnosis ranks fourth on the list of causes for medical malpractice lawsuits.

Sadly, those who fall victim to a cancer misdiagnosis suffer physical, emotional and financial loss. They might even suffer from a reduced chance of survival. These individuals may want justice for how they were wronged, and they may be able to do so by utilizing the legal system.

Getting the right information about medical malpractice claims can help these victims. The right approach will include an attempt to assess a doctor’s actions and whether or not they lived up to the minimum standard of care. If not, compensation may be recoverable for both economic and noneconomic losses, and may bring a victim much needed closure.
