This blog often discusses instances of nursing home neglect, how it can be spotted, and the legal actions that be taken against such negligent institutions. While these negligent acts may not be intentional, there are some acts taken by medical personnel that are meant to harm patients. Miami residents should be aware of these situations, too, and know how to spot them.

One of these situations may have taken place recently in Miami, when a nursing home’s mattress caught fire. Three of the home’s patients had to be taken to the hospital. Though the cause of the fire is unknown at this time, the Miami-Dade police department has been called in to investigate the suspicious blaze.

Nursing home abuse occurs when malicious acts are taken against a resident. This may mean a nursing home employee hits, pushes, or otherwise intentionally harms an individual living in the home. Starting a fire or using fire to injure or torture a resident may also be considered nursing home abuse. Other signs of abuse include unexplained bruising, cuts and a fear of certain employees.

Abuse should never occur in any circumstance, but especially in a nursing home where the victim is too frail to protect him or herself. Unfortunately though, these instances still occur with regularity. When one is victimized by abuse, he or she may be able to take legal action against the employee who harmed him or her and the home where the employee works.

A Miami attorney can aid the victim in filing this lawsuit, and will do everything in his or her power to hold the responsible party accountable. In addition, if a case is successful, then compensation may be awarded for the victim’s harm, which may include medical expenses and pain and suffering.
