Study shows misdiagnoses injure or kill thousands each year

There are many aspects to healthcare, all of which play an important role in helping patients get better. Prescribing proper medication, accurately performing surgeries, and fully discussing the patient’s options are all extremely important. Yet, none of these branches of healthcare are likely to go favorably when a doctor fails to diagnose a condition or he diagnoses the condition too late. These types of mishaps are extremely dangerous, and Floridians should be aware of them.

According to a study conducted by Johns Hopkins University, as many as 160,000 patients are permanently injured or killed as a result of diagnostic errors. Such misdiagnoses or delayed diagnoses can be related to cancer, meningitis, or any other number of serious medical concerns. Experts in the field are attempting to find ways to prevent these errors by using technology such as portable diagnostic tests, programs that check for missing or delayed lab results, and conducting additional studies. But until these preventable mistakes are exterminated, Florida patients will remain at risk of being harmed by medical malpractice.

It is therefore important Floridians know their legal rights when they are wrongly injured by a medical professional. As the victim may be left unable to work, enjoy life, and to pay for additional medical treatment, he or she might want to seek compensation. Perhaps the best way to recover these losses is to file a medical malpractice lawsuit against the patient’s doctor and the hospital at which he works.

A Miami attorney can assist in developing a medical malpractice lawsuit with a focus on showing doctor negligence. If the duty of care owed to a patient is breached, which often occurs in an instance of misdiagnosis, then compensation may be recovered for various types of harm, such as medical expenses, pain and suffering and lost wages.
