How common are bedsores and how can they affect my loved one?

If you have, or about to, place a loved one in a nursing home, then you know the fear that can be associated with choosing the right residence. Though we hope that all of these institutions and their employees diligently work to keep their residents safe, this is not always the case. Tragically, many of the harmful instances that befall our loved ones are completely preventable and, if left untreated, could be fatal.

One of the more common results of nursing home neglect is pressure ulcers, oftentimes referred to as bedsores. Every year, about 60,000 individuals die as a result of bedsores, which can become infected. Also, studies estimate that anywhere from 3.5 to 4.5 percent of all hospital patients have bedsores. That is a significant number that doesn't even touch nursing homes. These ulcers can form when an immobilized resident, or one who has trouble moving, is not repositioned in a timely manner. In other words, neglecting to give a resident the attention and care he or she needs and deserves can lead to this significant problem.

The costs associated with treating bedsores can be daunting, too. You may have to pay for additional medical treatment, which could run into the tens of thousands of dollars. Additionally, you or your loved one may suffer significant pain and suffering. When this happens, you have the legal right to file a lawsuit against any employees and institutions that may have contributed to you or your loved one's harm.

Going up against a nursing home may seem daunting. But by taking action, you may be able to recover compensation to help cover additional medical treatment, as well as monetary awards to help ease pain and suffering. Though bedsores continue to be a problem in hospitals and nursing homes across the country, legal action may help curtail this devastating issue.
