Nursing homes receive "B" grade, but many still on watch list

Families for Better Care is a Florida based organization dedicated to forcing nursing homes around the country to provide residents with better care. In an effort to raise awareness of nursing home failures, the group has created a grading system for state nursing homes. While Florida received a "B" overall, 138 out of Florida's 680 nursing homes remain on a watch list. With questionable practices taking place in many of Florida's nursing homes, residents, including those in Miami, are put at extreme risk of serious injury.

Nursing home neglect can take many forms. Some signs of neglect or nursing home abuse include rapid weight loss, a nursing home fall, bedsores, unexplained bruising, and dehydration. Any of these conditions can be life-threatening for an elderly loved one, and should therefore be taken very seriously. Those who suspect nursing home neglect or abuse has occurred should report it immediately.

A victim of neglect can also choose to file a lawsuit against the institution and the employees who harmed him. Essentially, a lawsuit seeks to recover compensation for the victim's harms and punish the institution that allowed such negligent practices. By contacting a Miami attorney experienced with nursing home neglect cases, the victim can learn of the legal options available to him and the steps that must be taken should he decide to move forward.

An attorney will seek to gather the necessary evidence to put forth a winning case. If the case is successful and judgment is rendered in the plaintiff's favor, then compensation may be received. This money can be helpful in reaching the fullest recovery possible as it often helps cover medical expenses and pain and suffering.

Living in a nursing home away from loved ones can be difficult. When employees at the nursing home fail to provide adequate care, life can be terrifying. To seek an end to this care and to prevent it from happening in the future, an injured nursing home resident should consider seeking legal assistance.
