Florida nursing home neglect investigation leads to 2 arrests

Florida is home to many elderly residents and care facilities, so when nursing home neglect happens in the state, it tends to hit home for many residents. On Dec. 6, two employees of the Clermont Health & Rehabilitation Center, located in the central region of Florida, were arrested at the facility on charges of neglect of a disabled elderly person. The charges are connected to the death of a patient at the facility earlier this year. The Florida attorney general's office has said the accused women did not follow a primary care doctor's orders, and that this failure contributed to the death of the patient. The two women were placed in the Lake County jail.

Medical malpractice likely cause of second degree burns

A 29-year-old Florida woman undergoing the removal of cysts from her head was recently the victim of a potentially grave case of medical malpractice. While undergoing surgery, she experienced severe burns that remain unexplained. The second-degree burns were obtained while she was unconscious during the cyst removal surgery at the North Okaloosa Medical Center and were probably the result of medical malpractice.Although the Florida medical center has reportedly released a statement of apology and expressed regret at what the victim has endured, it did not reveal the cause of the blaze that resulted in the burns. That they responded immediately to the fire eruption is likely of little comfort to the victim, whose burns covered both her face. She was airlifted to the University of South Alabama Burn Unit. The victim's mother also shared her anger at the hospital staff and of the secrecy surrounding the cause of the burns.

Grievous medication error cause of Florida man's death

Medication errors can sometimes be fatal. A South Florida man went into a hospital and later died after a nurse apparently gave him a drug used during executions. The medication error occurred after a 79-year-old man was admitted to North Shore Medical Center in Miami for shortness of breath. The man's son claims that when he arrived at the hospital, the doctor told him that the nurse gave his father the incorrect medication that subsequently sent him into respiratory arrest. He then asked the doctor whether or not the nurse read the medication label. The son claims that the doctor told him that the packaging for both medications looked similar, and that the nurse grabbed the wrong one. The 79-year-old man was resuscitated but he died nearly a month after the incident.

Medical malpractice causes unexpected death of healthy twin

In 2010 a Florida abortion provider committed an egregious act of medical malpractice. The male doctor was treating a patient pregnant with twins, one of whom had Down syndrome. The mother made the difficult decision to abort the baby with Down syndrome, but the procedure ended up killing the other baby. After losing his medical license, based on his medical malpractice in this case, as well as other instances of "shoddy" work, the man was hospitalized in a local mental health facility after the threatened to commit suicide.

Failure to appropriately supervise a patient leads to suicide

Often the injuries and deaths that occur when patients are under the care of medical personnel are entirely preventable. Such was the case when a patient bolted from security personnel and threw himself off a parking lot structure at the Jackson Memorial Hospital. The conclusion that the incident could have been prevented came after a state investigation into the unexpected death that occurred in Florida.
